PARADISE

by Genya Turovskaya

The fire, they say, has a mind

            of its own

It bloomed at night    blithely

murderous

                flesh-eating flower

Vaulted the petals

of all that effort     its blazing

and pitiless

                       intelligence

                                      to leap

insatiable         across

the boiling river
